Different terminologies have been used over time to describe the tendon pain that impairs people’s functional capacity. Historically, the term tendinitis was first used to refer to this condition. Subsequently, other terms such as tendinosis and tendinopathy emerged. However, what is the best term to refer to this condition? In 2018, a group of international clinical and researcher experts in the field carried out a consensus process agreeing that the best term to refer to persistent tendon pain associated with functional limitations is tendinopathy.1
Tendon pain occurs in several anatomical sites. Therefore, patellar tendinopathy is the preferred term for persistent pain on the patellar tendon.1 Another very popular term to refer to patellar tendinopathy is jumper’s knee, as findings from epidemiological studies indicate an association between the incidence and prevalence of patellar tendinopathy and sports involving jumping, such as volleyball and basketball.2 However, jumper’s knee is not a synonymous of patellar tendinopathy, as the term includes both patellar tendinopathy and quadriceps tendinopathy, which are conditions that differ from each other.3
